Troubleshooting & repairs

A breaker that keeps tripping, half the outlets dead, lights that flicker when the fridge kicks on — small symptoms often point to a single loose connection. We find it, fix it, and explain what happened.

Common problems we fix

  • Breakers that trip repeatedly
  • Dead outlets or switches
  • Flickering or dimming lights
  • Warm outlets, switches or panels
  • GFCI and AFCI nuisance tripping
  • Partial power loss in the house
  • Damaged or scorched receptacles
  • Outdoor outlets and lighting faults

Smell burning or see sparks? Turn off the breaker for that area — or the main breaker if you're not sure — and keep clear of the panel. If there's smoke or fire, call 911 first. Then call us.

How we troubleshoot

We start at the panel and trace the circuit methodically, testing at each device until we find the fault — not swapping parts until the problem goes away. Most faults are a loose or failed connection at one outlet or switch. If we find something bigger, you'll see it (with photos) before we quote.

Flickering lights

A single flickering fixture is usually a lamp or dimmer compatibility issue. Lights that dim across the house when a large appliance starts can point to a loose neutral or a service problem — which should be checked promptly, and sometimes involves the utility.

Questions

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

An overloaded circuit, a short or ground fault in a device or appliance, or a failing breaker. AFCI breakers can also trip on damaged cords or loose connections. We trace the circuit to find which one.

Why are half my outlets not working?

Often a tripped GFCI upstream (check bathrooms, garage, exterior), or a loose connection at one outlet that feeds the rest of the circuit. If resetting GFCIs doesn't help, call us.

Is a warm outlet dangerous?

A warm or discoloured outlet means a poor connection or overload and should be checked soon. Stop using it until it's inspected.
